Do I need a Shower Water Filter ?

So you want to know if you need a shower water filter? I could just say yes, but it would come off as just trying to sell a water filter. Lets give you some reasoning.

First lets ask why do you think you need one.

You must be having hard water stains in your shower, or you could have dry itchy skin. Maybe your skin is rough. Fact of the matter is you are here looking for a solution or maybe a why. Let’s Dive in.

So what does a shower water filter do? and how does it work.

What is a Shower water filter? A shower water filter is an apparatus that installs on a shower head or just before the shower head. Its sole purpose is to filter whats coming out of the tap. So why would we need to filter the water if its city water? Water municipalities use certain chemicals to sanitize the water from virus, pathogens, or bacteria.

What types of chemicals do they put in the water.

Lead- lead usually comes from old lead pipes that are found in old houses. It’s not that common in new houses, but the old houses you definitely want to filter the water.

Fluoride – This is a chemical you don’t want to ingest. This toxic chemical can effect children’s brain development, not something you want your children exposed to. And really shouldn’t be in American water, but big industry labels it as beneficial to teeth. Fluoride is a controversial topic so I will just touch on this, but if you are interested in knowing more about this I recommend this book called “The Truth about Fluoride“.

Arsenic – Contamination in drinking water poses serious health risks to humans. Here are some of the dangers associated with arsenic exposure Cancer, Neurological effects, Diabetes, and Reproductive effects.

Chlorine – commonly used chlorine to disinfect water, eliminating harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens to ensure its safety for consumption. However, while chlorine is effective at purifying water, it can also have some potential health and environmental effects.

  • Taste and Odor: Chlorine can impart a noticeable taste and odor to water, often described as “chlorine-like” or “pool-like.” Some people find this taste and odor unpleasant, which can affect the overall Shower quality, and if you love a hot shower like I do then that can create a steam in the air that you will inhale which is not good for the lungs.
  • Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs): When chlorine reacts with organic matter present in water, it can form disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). DBPs, associated with health effects like cancer and reproductive problems, are typically regulated to minimize these risks in treated water.
  • Dryness and Irritation of Hair: Chlorine can strip natural oils from the hair and scalp, leading to dryness, brittleness, and irritation. That is why its important to have a shower water filter. Chlorine also drys out skin causing it to itch and can cause you to consume more soap and conditioner.

So whats in a Shower Water filter?

In a 15 stage water filter there are 15 elements the water has to pass through before it comes out of the shower head. Each element functions for a specific job.

  1. So the first job of the shower water filter is to remove sediment. Whats sediment? The definition of sediment is matter that settles to the bottom of a liquid (basically dirt).
  2. Usually activated carbon is next in line to remove chlorine(different manufactures have different processes they uses so they can call it a patented process.
  3. KDF Process Medium has copper and zinc that removes heavy metals and other contaminants
  4. Alkaline Ceramic Balls: These balls typically contain minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which help increase the pH of the water and add beneficial minerals.
  5. Tourmaline Ceramic Balls: Many believe that tourmaline possesses antioxidant properties that can enhance water purification.
  6. Far Infrared Ceramic Balls: These ceramic balls emit far-infrared radiation, which many believe offers various health benefits and can help improve water structure and absorption.
  7. Negative Ion Ceramic Balls: Negative ion balls release negative ions into the water, which can have various health benefits and help neutralize positively charged ions.
  8. Ion Exchange Resin: This resin can help remove heavy metals and certain dissolved ions from the water through ion exchange processes.
  9. Mineral Stone: Mineral stones, often composed of various minerals like silica, calcium, and magnesium, can help add beneficial minerals to the water and improve taste.
  10. Ceramic Filter: Ceramic filters can trap bacteria, cysts, and sediment, providing an additional layer of filtration.
  11. Activated Alumina: Activated alumina can effectively remove fluoride and arsenic from the water
  12. Bio Ceramic Balls: These balls often contain beneficial bacteria that can help break down organic matter and improve water quality.
  13. Negative Potential Particles: These particles release negative ions into the water, which can help improve antioxidant activity and overall water quality.
  14. Anti-Bacterial Balls: These balls contain materials that inhibit the growth of bacteria and help maintain water purity.
  15. Post Carbon Filter: This final stage helps remove any remaining impurities and odors from the water, ensuring it tastes clean and fresh.

In conclusion

Knowing whats lurking around in your water can the the difference in feeling clean, healthy and having soft hair So having a shower filter in your bathroom can make a very big difference. I have one on my shower and it helps my son with his eczema.
